Life Cycle Assessment of Biofuels

چکیده

To address energy security and climate-change concerns, substitutes are needed for petroleum-based transportation fuels. In addition to electricity natural gas, biofuels emerging as an important class of substitutes. The promotion is mainly driven by the perspective oil depletion, concerns about security, global warming. However, results published in past few decades present conflicting pictures regarding efficiency sustainability biofuels. adequately these real or apparent contradictions, a life cycle assessment (LCA) indispensable. “Life cycle” refers all stages process: from cradle, that is, raw material extraction through manufacturing, distribution, use ultimate disposal. This chapter discusses benefits limitations LCA standpoint. discrepancies strengths critically analyzed opportunities highlighted. shown be critical informing policy practical application.

Life-Cycle Assessment of Microalgal-Based Biofuels

Fossil fuel depletion and attempts of global warming mitigation have motivated the development of biofuels. Several feedstock and transformation pathways into biofuel have been proposed as an alternative to usual fuels. Recently, microalgae have attracted a lot of attention because of the promise of reduced competition with food crop and lowered environmental impacts. Over the last years, sever...

Review Transport biofuels – a life-cycle assessment approach

Life-cycle studies of the currently dominant transport biofuels (bioethanol made from starch or sugar and biodiesel made from vegetable oil) show that solar energy conversion efficiency is relatively poor if compared with solar cells and that such biofuels tend to do worse than conventional fossil transport fuels as to the emission of eutrophying and acidifying substances. Lifecycle studies of ...

Life-cycle assessment of transportation biofuels from hydrothermal liquefaction of forest residues in British Columbia

Background Biofuels from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of abundantly available forest residues in British Columbia (BC) can potentially make great contributions to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector. A life-cycle assessment was conducted to quantify the GHG emissions of a hypothetic 100 million liters per year HTL biofuel system in the Coast Region of BC....
